calls for an artist to cancel a performance. If a cancellation
requires us to schedule another performer, the series will
always seek to substitute a comparable artist with similar
credentials and performance standards within a related genre.
Funding for the Performing Arts Series is provided in part
by the University of Nevada, Reno School of the Arts and Extended
Studies; the Associated Students of the University of Nevada;
the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency; National Endowment

Can we be fooled into loving? In one of Shakespeare’s
most delightful yet bittersweet comedies, the sparring, reluctant
lovers Beatrice and Benedick find themselves the victims of
a practical joke that may, indeed, change their lives forever.
Balanced boldly between comedy and tragedy, Much Ado revels
in reversals, exposing the betrayed as traitor and the misogynist
as besotted lover. Set in a time of peace at the end of a
foreign war, it unmasks the conflict that follows soldiers
home: insidious battles hidden deep within souls left silently
embittered by society and circumstance.

Religion and the Constitution
Nov. 14 and 21; Fridays, 10-11:30 a.m.
The very first clause in the Bill of Rights reads, “Congress
shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Modern scholars
have read this provision as guaranteeing two separate rights:
1) the right to be free from the establishment of religion
and 2) the right to freely practice religion. In this course,
we will examine what the Framers may have wanted to secure
with these rights and how these rights are interpreted today.
Our discussion will consider the limits of freedom from establishment
and freedom to practice in an effort to understand the difficult
and sometimes strange compromises made in our “one nation
under God.” Free with $45 OLLI annual membership fee.
Held at OLLI in the Warren Nelson Building, 401 W. Second
St., Reno. For registration and more information, call the

Literary Nevada: Writings from the Silver State –
Glotfelty Book Launch
Nov. 17; Monday, 1:30-3 p.m.
Cheryll Glotfelty, Ph.D., associate professor of English at
UNR will talk about her recently released anthology, which
shares the literary riches of the Comstock Lode as well as
other eras and regions reflected in the literature of Nevada.
Nevada’s mining heyday produced millions of dollars
in ore and attracted incredible talent. While the fabulous
ore bodies associated with this period are legendary, much
of the colorful writing and writers of the period have faded
into obscurity, with the exception of the justifiably famous
Mark Twain. But Twain was not alone, and he was arguably not
even the best of the Comstock Chroniclers. Dr. Glotfelty has
put Twain in the good company of other writers on the Comstock
and beyond and introduces you to recent scholarship that is
rediscovering and republishing writing from the Sagebrush
School. (If you have picked up a copy of her new book, available
from the University’s ASUN Bookstore, Sundance Bookstore
and others in the area, we bet Dr. Glotfelty would be happy
to give you her autograph.) Free with $45 OLLI annual membership
fee. Held at OLLI in the Warren Nelson Building, 401 W. Second
St., Reno. For registration and more information, call the
